This album features some great rhodes playing by Joe Sample, who is certainly one of the most underated pianists of the 70's. However, the Rhodes is often buried in the mix. For more quintessential Crusaders material, check out "Street Life" or "Those Southern Knights." |

One of my favorite Crusaders albums along with Chain Reaction. I'm sure Joe Sample loved playing the Rhodes but probably didn't think it was a good substitute for the acoustic grand. It seems the electric piano was a high water mark during the 1970's then just died off once polyphonic synths took over including the very wretched Yamaha DX7. It's good to see it making a comeback but it unfortunately is nowhere to be heard among the dreck that passes for music these days. |
