No household anywhere should be allowed not to have at least ONE Johnny "Guitar" Watson record in stock. If in doubt which one to buy, go for this great sampler compiled by his daughter, collecting his (reportedly) favourite selections fom the Funk Years (= mid-to-late 70's). Iconic tunes such as "Ain't That A Bitch",
"Funk Beyond The Call Of Duty" or "A Real Mother For Ya" have it all together:
Johnny's unique singing and guitar playing style ("...like an icepick in the
forehead" - JGW admirer Frank Zappa), his good-natured tongue-in-cheek boasting
and (sometimes pretty sarcastic) humor, pre-rap rapping ("Telephone Bill"!) - and of course his very own trademark funky arranging style with lots of Rhodes, horns and whatever more you needed to lay down a nasty killer groove back then. Sad thing is that this enormously gifted, entertaining, sharp-dressed and extremely influential artist passed away as early as 1996, but at least he managed to leave the planet the way he always wanted to: struck down on stage mid-tune. His funk, however, is immortal - as it can righteously be expected from a "Superman Lover"! |
