late-period cannonball with george duke on rhodes (back and forth between 'ball and zappa at this period, i believe). live performance at the troubador theater finds the adderley quintet augmented with various guests and carving out their own niche in the post-coltrane, post-electric miles jazz world. many free-form pieces have an early weather report vibe (not surprisingly, as duke had just replaced zawinul). the title track, "steam drill", "the chocolate nuisance" and others find the band whipping up some odd-timed grooves and soloing with great emotional intensity. this is probably only available on vinyl from what i've seen, but snap it up if you see it (it also has a few tribe called quest samples here and there....) |
