Of all the Yellowjackets albums, the first is still my favorite. I downloaded it off of iTunes a couple of weeks ago after not hearing it since around 1990, and the first track ("Matinee Idol") was blowing my mind. I always loved the groove of it, but I never really realized where Russell Ferrante's sound was coming from...he was doubling the Rhodes with acoustic piano, almost note-for-note! These days you'd do it with some sort of MIDI layering, but this was 1981.... |
